Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept every horse in need?

No. Intake decisions depend on capacity, resources, and whether we can responsibly meet a horse’s needs.

Can anyone volunteer?

Volunteering is by application. We aim to ensure a good fit for both people and horses, with safety and welfare guiding all decisions.

Can I surrender a horse to Hawkez Haven?

Please contact us first. All surrender requests are assessed carefully based on welfare, space, and resources.

Where do donations go?

Donations support daily care, veterinary and farrier costs, feed, and maintaining a safe environment for the horses.

sales q&a

Why do you require a “Sale to Approved Home”?

Our horses come to us after experiencing disruption, pressure, neglect, trauma or instability. This approach allows us to sell horses while still ensuring they are protected long-term. It’s about responsibility, not control.

Why do you ask for references?

References help us confirm that a horse will receive consistent care — including farrier, veterinary, and daily management. Good homes understand this and are happy to provide them.

Does this mean Hawkez Haven owns the horse forever?

No. Ownership transfers fully to the buyer. The agreement simply ensures that if the horse ever needs rehoming, Hawkez Haven is contacted first.

What if my circumstances change?

If Circumstances Change

If, at any point, a buyer can no longer keep their horse, we kindly ask that Hawkez Haven is given first option to take the horse back. This helps ensure the horse is never passed around, sent to auction, placed into a situation that doesn’t suit their needs, or worse case scenario.

We enter into these placements with high hopes that our buyers share the same heart and values, that horses are a lifelong commitment, and that their wellbeing always comes first. If rehoming is ever required, we trust that the same ethical, welfare-first approach will be followed, or that the horse will be offered back to us so we can help guide their next step.

Life happens, but we can still help support the best outcome for the horse. There is no judgement, welfare comes first.

Is the price negotiable?

Yes, always for the right home. A secure, knowledgeable home matters more than money. Price is negotiable, home IS not. This is something we will always stand by.

Do you offer trials?

In some cases, yes. Trial periods are discussed on an individual basis once an application has been approved.

Is this process negotiable?

No. These boundaries exist to protect the horses. If this approach doesn’t feel right for you, we completely understand and wish you well in finding the right match elsewhere.

Why is your process so strict?

Because horses pay the price when processes are loose. Our standards exist to:

Prevent repeated rehoming, avoid impulse decisions, and protect horses from being passed on when things get hard.

We would rather lose a placement than fail a horse.

Why do you charge a set price?

At Hawkez Haven, we use a tiered pricing model to ensure fairness, transparency, and sustainability.

Most horses fall within our Green Bracket, with prices generally ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. It is very rare for a horse to be priced above this range unless there is a clear and justified reason based on the individual horse’s circumstances.

Any funds received from rehoming a horse are reinvested directly back into the horses still in our care. This includes ongoing veterinary treatment, farrier work, dentistry, rehabilitation, specialized feed, rugs, and day-to-day care.

We do not operate for profit. Rehoming fees allow us to keep going — helping one horse at a time, and sometimes more — while always putting their welfare first. This model ensures we can continue rescuing, rehabilitating, and responsibly rehoming horses without compromising their care.

What if the horse doesn’t meet my expectations?

Horses are individuals, not guarantees. We encourage: Honest communication, asking for help early, adjusting expectations, and making decisions before resentment or pressure builds.  Returning a horse responsibly is better than forcing a situation to work.

What if I still have questions?

Questions are welcome. We would rather explain our process upfront than repair harm later.

If you value transparency, responsibility, and horse-first decision making, you will likely feel comfortable working with us.
